The Sidekicks (Epitaph Records)
The Sidekicks is a band from Columbus, Ohio and they will release their new album Runners in the Nerved World on January 20 via Epitaph Records. The first song from the album has premiered at Noisey. Runners in the Nerved World was produced by Phil Ek in Seattle, WA. It was a dream for The Sidekicks to work with the producer responsible for iconic albums from Band of Horses, Fleet Foxes, Built to Spill, and The Shins to name a few. During the recording process, the band took full advantage of their 6-week studio time to let the songs go where they needed to go while Ek shaped the sound. The end result feels deceptively effortless; a collection of songs about the need to move forward, packed with buoyant melodies and razor-sharp hooks that go on for days and days.

"So am I being hoodwinked to even think that I could love you?" That question looms over everything on LVL UP's masterful sophomore album. It's a record that addresses our enormous capability for self-deception. Hoodwink'd is concerned with the idea that we're our own worst enemy, that we let emotions cloud our better judgement and hold us back from living up to our full potential. Whether it's triggered by low self-esteem or anxiety or a perpetual fear of failure, it's all the same we lie to ourselves, and that's the most dangerous thing we can do. "I keep trying/ keep, keep trying to lose," Dave Benton sings at one point, practically forcing the words out because the realization is too hard to face: we're not entirely in control of our own mind, and we rarely know what's best for ourselves.
