Tibetan Cultural Night - Sacred Dance and Chants of Tibet
Tickets will be available at the door starting at 6:30pm.
On tour in the United States to raise money for reconstruction of their "monastery in exile", the Tibetan monks of Gaden Shartse Dokhang Monastery present this special night of sacred music, dance and chant that will transport the audience to the legendary "roof-of-the-world Himalayan kingdom of Tibet and Tibetan Buddhism.
For thousands of years, Tibet developed one of the most mysterious and beautiful cultures in the world, tied deeply to traditional Tibetan Buddhism and pre-Buddhist Bon religious ceremony, folk dances and festivals.
Tibetan chant and music has long been synonymous with the majestic Himalayan mountains, echoing the sounds of howling winds, crashing thunder, cascading glacial-fed rivers, and the deep meditative states of Tibetan Buddhism. Using the extraordinary 10 foot long Tibetan horns, with Tibetan cymbals, drums, and other instruments, the monks will demonstrate this unique blend of religious ritual and otherworldly sound.
Tibetan sacred dance is also intricately tied to Tibetan Buddhism and folk culture. The beautiful masked "Deer Dance" and the crowd and kid-pleasing "Yak Dance" harken to the ancient homeland of the Tibetan monks, as well as to classic vaudevillian comedy and slapstick in the "Yak Dance". These and other dances will be performed by the monks, with accompaniment on traditional Tibetan sacred instruments.
This is a night to remember! A view into a world that is quickly vanishing in its own homeland of Tibet, but which continues to flourish and survive in exile at the monasteries and on tours like these.
