The American Philosophical Society and Salon/Sanctuary Concerts present an original theatrical production based on 40 years of correspondence between Thomas Jefferson and Maria Cosway, an accomplished artist, musician, composer, and society hostess who began a relationship with Jefferson while he served as American envoy to France.
Igniting in Revolutionary Paris and unfolding over a 40-year epistolary relationship, the letters reveal Jefferson's evolving views on the separation of church and state, intermingled with her account of a stifling marriage and the limited options open to a woman of brilliance.
With an original script composed entirely of selections from their writings, this play with music features repertoire that they heard, composed, played, and sent to each other, including works of Corelli, Hewitt, Sacchini, and Cosway herself.
This intimate performance will bring to vivid life the passionate, moving, and star-crossed relationship of Jefferson and Cosway, the turbulence of the French Revolution, and Jefferson's revolutionary views about the role of religion in American society. A treat for lovers of history, romance, politics, and music.
