About the Choirs:
The Pennsylvania State University Men's Glee Club is directed by Christopher Kiver. The Glee Club is Penn State's oldest musical organization and is composed of 60-80 singers from all majors in the University. The ensemble was founded in 1888, and since its first spring tour in March of 1889, the Glee Club has toured throughout the United States and abroad, with recent tours to Wales, Trinidad and Tobago, France, and California. The Glee Club sings music for men's voices from the 16th to the 20th centuries, including sacred and secular works, folksongs from around the world, African American spirituals, traditional college songs, and songs of Penn State. Also performing during Glee Club concerts are two small ensembles: the Hi-Lo's, a specialty group founded in 1933 to perform madrigals, glees and popular songs; and the Varsity Quartet, dating from the 1920's, performing barbershop standards.
The acclaimed Smith College Glee Club is open by audition to women in all of the upper classes, including Ada Comstock scholars. The group rehearses twice weekly and performs at all-college events and choral concerts, including Montage, Autumn Serenade, and Vespers. They also tour in the U.S. during the year, performing at schools, colleges and universities on the East coast and in the Midwest. The group performs a diverse repertoire, including the premiere women's choral pieces from Western art music, new works commissioned specifically for the group, and jazz, contemporary, and folk music. Each spring, men's glee clubs from colleges such as Harvard, Rutgers, the Naval Academy, the University of Michigan, and the University of Virginia collaborate with the Glee Club in performances of major works that have included Carmina Burana, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, and Brahms's German Requiem. The Glee Club has been featured at annual conventions of the American Choral Directors Association and the National Collegiate Choral Organization.
The dynamic Smith College Chorus is open by audition to all women of the Smith community, though its primary focus is on first-year students. This group sings timeless, beloved classics of the choral repertoire as well as popular standards and exciting new works for women's chorus. Concert opportunities include all main Smith choral concerts: Montage, Autumn Serenade, Vespers, and Spring Serenade. Highlights of recent Chorus performances include the Vivaldi Gloria with chamber orchestra and student soloists and a collaboration with the Smith College Glee Club & Orchestra and the Virginia Men's Glee Club in performance of Carmina Burana. In the 2013-2014 year, Chorus programs featured an exciting variety of works from around the world, including those by composers Stephen Paulus, Erik Esenvalds, Gustav Holst, Ethan Sperry, and Tarik O'Regan. The 2014 year features the world premiere of a newly commissioned work for women's voices by Dominick DiOrio, composer: "Leave My Heart Its Songs."
