Phil Kline's Unsilent Night North Adams
Phil Kline's Unsilent Night is a free outdoor participatory sound sculpture of many individual parts, recorded on cassettes, CDs, mp3s, and the Unsilent Night app, and played through a roving swarm of boomboxes carried through city streets every December. People bring their own boomboxes or other music-amplifying devices and drift peacefully through a cloud of sound which is different from every listener's perspective. Since 1992, this 45-minute work has grown into a worldwide annual communal event that has become an essential part of many winter holiday celebrations.
This will be the first year the piece is performed in North Adams, and we are thrilled that Phil Kline will be joining us to kick off this inaugural event!
For the North Adams, MA edition, participants will gather in the MASS MoCA parking lot (87 Marshall Street, North Adams, MA) beginning at 5:15pm for distribution of a limited number of boomboxes and cassette tapes, as well as technical assistance as necessary. At 5:30pm, Phil Kline will lead the group chorus of boomboxes and other devices on a 40 minute walk up Route 2--to help celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Mohawk Trail--and through downtown North Adams, ending at MCLA Gallery 51 for the opening of their Affordable Art Fair.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own boomboxes or other sound-making devices (the louder the better!) and to prepare a cassette tape, CD, or download the mp3 or Unsilent Night app before arriving. Tracks can be downloaded or streamed at http://www.unsilentnight.com/download
The event is free of charge. The route is handicapped accessible with no stairs, though there are hills in several areas of the route. The event is family friendly and children are welcome; however, keep in mind that we will be outside after dark in December for approximately 1 hour. There are ample opportunities to leave the route if necessary.
