Engineers Without Borders USA is a non-profit humanitarian organization whose mission is "to support community-driven development programs worldwide through partnerships that design and implement sustainable engineering projects, while creating transformative experiences that enrich global perspectives and create responsible leaders." At Oregon State University, nearly seventy students are involved in this organization (EWB-OSU), including a team of dedicated individuals who work directly with the community of Lela in Kenya. Since 2009, fifteen students have traveled to Lela and have collectively witnessed significant changes in the community as more people gain access to a reliable source of clean drinking water. Cases of childhood diarrhea have dropped by about 76%, and children are spending more time at school and less time collecting water. These changes are due largely to the people of Lela and their ownership of the project, as well as the motivated students who have taken the time to listen to the community and work with them towards a brighter future.
On January 10, 2015 EWB-OSU is hosting a community concert and celebration, Lela Fête, to rejoice in this partnership and express solidarity with the people of Lela, Kenya. The concert will feature music by Simba & the Exceptional Africans from Moscow, Idaho and The Unknowns from Corvallis. Additionally, African cuisine will be available for purchase. All proceeds will go directly towards the implementation of additional sustainable water sources in Lela. Tickets will be available at the door for $12.
