Charles Slender Workshop
COUNTER TECHNIQUE Countertechnique provides tools for body and mind to deal with the demanding dance practice of the 21st century. It is a movement system to help the dancer think about the dancing body, focusing on the process of incorporating information into action. Within a clear structure of exercises, the Countertechnique class thoroughly prepares the body for rehearsal and performance, enabling dancers to move bigger, more fluidly and more spatially, while becoming stronger and more flexible. http://www.countertechnique.com/what-it-is/
CHARLES SLENDER has performed, made choreography, and taught in the United States, Russia, Hong Kong, Poland, Latvia, Mexico, and France; he founded FACT/SF in 2008. His choreography embraces technical formalism with regular injections of quirk and wit, while incorporating the risque, the macabre, and the unexpected. His work has been commissioned by the US Department of State, CounterPULSE, Electric Works Gallery, College Preparatory School, Dialogue Dance Company (Kostroma, Russia), Acid Rain and the Chelyabinsk State Pedagogical University (Chelyabinsk, Russia), and the Yekaterinburg University of the Humanities (Yekaterinburg, Russia). In 2007, The Fringe Club (Hong Kong) presented three new works Charles developed in collaboration with Emily Woo Zeller. In 2006 and 2007, Charles performed with Provincial Dances Theatre in Yekaterinburg, Russia, under the direction of Tatiana Baganova. With Provincial Dances he toured internationally, taught company and master classes, and collaborated on the creation of new works. In addition to his work as a choreographer and performer, Charles has taught on faculty at Shawl-Anderson Dance Center in Berkeley, and has been a guest teacher at CSU East Bay, the SF Conservatory of Dance, and the College Preparatory School in Oakland. Charles was also visiting faculty at the American Dance Festival in 2007 and 2009. Charles graduated with honors from the University of California, Berkeley, with degrees in English Literature and Dance & Performance Studies.
