Post-Thanksgiving Hike at Calabazas Creek Open Space Preserve
Stuffed?! Come join us on a rigorous hike at Calabazas Creek Open Space Preserve! The Preserve, which is managed by the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District, is located between the towns of Glen Ellen and Kenwood. Known for its stunning vistas, open meadows, waterfalls, and oak woodlands, Calabazas Creek provides hikers with a multitude of microclimates as well as a workout.

You are invited to join Sonoma Ecology Center naturalists for a fall exploration through the Preserve on Saturday, November 29, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

"As we hike to the top, we are welcomed by breath-taking vistas. Calabazas Creek Open Space Preserve offers creek crossings and autumn colors, banana slugs, and wildlife," says naturalist and hike leader Cassandra Liu.

The Calabazas Creek Open Space Preserve was protected by the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District in October of 2004 for recreation and preservation of its natural resources, including the stretch of Calabazas Creek that cascades down the canyon. This property  one of the most exquisite natural sites in Sonoma Valley is currently closed to the public except through guided outings and the District's volunteer patrol program. The District is developing a management and trails plan with the goal of ensuring greater public access and a Bay Area Ridge Trail connection.

This intermediate to advanced level hike is 8 miles in length, and contains several large elevation gains. All participants are required to wear appropriate footwear. We will hike in light rain, but a heavy rain will cancel the outing.

There is no charge for the outing, as it is made possible by the voters of Sonoma County who fund the Ag and Open Space District's work with a quarter-cent sales tax. Reservations are required by 5 p.m. Friday, November 28, 2014. For more information, or to register for the hike, visit the Sonoma Ecology Center website at www.sonomaecologycenter.org.
