Corner Store Campaign Benefit (Film Screening and Discussion)
Corner Store is the true story of one man, a country in turmoil, and the choices people make for a better life. Ten years, ago Yousef Elhaj left his wife and three small children in Palestine to escape the Israeli occupation and start a new life for them all in San Francisco. For the past decade he has worked day and night to build a small business, save money, and become part of his adopted community while still trying to stay connected from afar. The film profiles Yousef's life in San Francisco and the challenges of the immigration process for his family. It then follows his journey back to his fractured homeland to finally reunite with this family. But a lot has changed and Yousef must confront the new realieites in both his family and his country and decide if a new life in America is really still the right path for them to take. Compelling and emotionally engagine, the film is a story about community relationships, cultural understanding, immigration, and the politics of living in an occupied territory. Even more, the film is about family, the sacrifices people make for each other, and the deep connections that bind us together. The Corner Campaign was developed as a companion to the film to help those striving to address the issues at the heart of Yousef's story. Current partners include: International Solidarity Movement, Jewish Voice for Peace, The Arab Cultural and Community Center, The A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition. The event will include a preview screening of the film and a Q&A discussion with the main character Yousef Elhaj, Director/Producer Katherine Bruens, and several Campaign partner representatives. Notes: Seating for the film screening and discussion is general admission. The first five rows will be reserved for VIP ticket holders.
