Talented Tenth Reception and Silent Auction
The Seattle Alumnae chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc presents its 18th Talented Tenth Reception and Silent Auction, Saturday, February  27, 2010, 7:00p.m.-9:00p.m. at the Northwest African American Museum, 2300 S Massachusetts, Seattle, WA. The Silent Auction opens at 6:30p.m.

The Talented Tenth Celebration is a fundraiser that supports the Delta Upsilon Omega's ongoing community based programming and scholarships. The chapter awards several distinguished Community Service Awards to unique and outstanding contributors in our community. The award recognizes organizations or individuals who have made unique and outstanding contributions to the community gone above and beyond the call of duty to improve the quality of life for all in the community.

This year we are recognizing individuals, for-profits, and/or community organizations that have made unique and outstanding contributions to the African American community through economic empowerment or creating financial stability.

The 2010 Talented Tenth Honorees are as follows:

Diane Martin
Diane Martin is the Associate Director of Career Services at the University of Washington (UW). For nearly three decades, she has gone above and beyond what is required of her in her job to create opportunity and stability for UW students and alumni, particularly those from the African American community who are often otherwise overlooked.

Not only has Diane volunteered as a mentor and career counselor empowering numerous students and alumni during this time, but she has also guided and helped sustain two student organizations, the UW Association of Black Business Students (ABBS), and the UW National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), as their campus advisor. Both of these organizations have played an essential role for numerous African American students in the fields of business, and engineering through providing them academic and social support, career preparation, and job placement. The students and alumni in these organizations also play a pivotal role in uplifting and empowering the local and national African American community through their outreach and community service efforts as a collective.

Mary Mahoney Professional Nurses Organization
The Mary Mahoney Professional Nurses Organization or MMPNO was founded at the Seattle home of Anne Foy Baker in 1949. The MMPNO was established as a professional organization to give African-American nurses in the Seattle area an avenue to provide information and support one another, as well as provide financial aid and scholarship support to students who desired to pursue studies leading to careers in nursing.  In 2009, MMPNO celebrated its 60th anniversary and is the oldest professional nurseâs organization of African American nurses in the country.

Washington CASH
Washington Community Alliance for Self-Help (CASH) was founded in 1995 to transform peopleâs lives and communities by creating a pathway out of poverty using small business loans and business training to build individualsâ confidence, credit, knowledge and assets.  Washington CASH believes in the inherent strength, determination and intelligence of low-income entrepreneurs, and is committed to helping people develop themselves by developing their businesses.  By providing business development training, one-on-one coaching, collateral-free microloans, peer support, mentorship, Individual Development Accounts and computer lab access, Washington CASH helps hundreds of individuals build businesses, income and self-confidence each year.
