Kenya Love
In early 2009 the students of Engineers Without Borders at Oregon State University voted to adopt a water project in rural southwest Kenya. Lela is a small farming community of about 500 people who lack access to clean water year round. When the nearby water sources dry up during the 6 months of drought, the women and girls must walk up to 6 hours collect a single bucket of water, which is likely unfit for human consumption. Many children are unable to attend school in their daily trek for clean water. This past December three volunteers were on-site in Lela conducting a health and sanitation survey, meeting with the local water ministry, and building community relations. EWB-OSU is engaged in a five year contract with the Lela Women's Group to ensure project sustainability and, in the future, focus on other areas of need such as composting latrines, rainwater cachement and local reforestation.
Please join EWB-OSU this Valentine's Day weekend for a night of African entertainment, cuisine and silent auction as we work to bring the citizens of Lela clean water. The night starts with a silent auction of art and items brought back from Kenya by our traveling volunteers. Guests will enjoy authentic African dinner and entertainment followed by a presentation on EWB-OSU's Lela Water Project.
KENYA LOVE is a single night of good food and entertainment but will help to raise the standards of health, education and economic growth in Lela for many years to come.
