WEST
The Electric Lodge Performing Arts Center Venice, CA
"West" (1983) is a rarely-produced play by Steven Berkoff. "West" depicts the hard, gritty, working-class milieu of London's East End. Protagonist Mike belongs to a local gang, called upon to avenge the slaying of one of their number by the rival Hoxton Mob. Mike is selected to be his gangs fair one, chosen to represent his mates in single combat against his opposite number, the Hoxton Monster, a formidable thug of singular brutality and menace.
Berkoff states "'West' is about courage: the courage to live according to your spirit and not the guidelines laid down for you by others, to be true to yourself.Your truth is worth pursuing since it defines who you are." A man alone, armed with only his fists and his personal truth: It's the stuff of great classic storytelling.
