The Curiosity Cabaret - Episode 1: The Science & History of Voice in the 19th Century
Imagine an era when surgery is performed without anaesthesia, when aseptic technique and antibiotics do not exist. Imagine a time when doctors still cling to their superstitions and medicine is much more art than science.
Join us as we step into The Curiosity Cabaret
THE OLD OPERATING THEATRE
The Curiosity Cabaret will horrify and thrill you in the world's first ever medical cabaret, stunningly set in Britain's oldest surviving operating theatre, dating from 1822. The first in the series, The Science and History of Voice in the 19th Century, features some of London's best cabaret performers. Against these unique performances Rachel Rose Reid will engross you with an eye-opening lecture about the history of voice.
A place of education as well as eerie entertainment, The Old Operating Theatre of St Thomas Hospital was used for amputations or superficial operations as, without antiseptic, it was too dangerous to carry out other more complicated procedures. Take a glimpse into the world of medicine before the age of modern science and witness the blending of science and art in one of Britain's most unique pieces of living history.
