Tret Fure, Tracy Jane Comer, and Rachel Nelson in Concert
Three Songwriters
What do three solo acoustic songwriters do when they crave the fun of playing with other musicians live, but still want to perform their own originals? They form a collaboration.
Although this might look like a band, Tret Fure, Tracy Jane Comer and Rachel Nelson call it their collaborative performance option. Here, song arrangements can expand to include harmony vocals, several guitar syles, fiddles, cello, piano, hammered dulcimer, mandolin, or hand drum. And when accompanied by percussionist Michael âStixâ Kiley, the options expand further.
Tret Fure has won the South Florida Folk Festival Songwriting Competition in two out of three categories, Best Up-Tempo and Best Overall. Recipient of the Phyllis Schliessman Award for Outstanding Contributions to Womenâs Music, Fure has engineered and produced countless recordings by herself and many other artists over the past 30 years.
Most recently, Fure has released 3 acoustic CDs on her own label Tomboy Girl Records. Sing Out! Magazine says of My Shoes: âFureâs new solo venture signals her intent to do more than just move on. This album soars . . . She has never sounded better. . . . This mature effort surely ranks among Fureâs finest works and will be savored by old-time fans and new fans alike.â Of her most recent CD Anytime Anywhere, Performing Songwriter says, âAcoustic guitars and various percussion instruments permeate the album, and Fureâs strong vocals breathe amazing life into her songs. The entire album consistently conveys Fureâs energetic spirit and passion for life.â
Tracy Jane Comer has been nominated four times for Best Acoustic Artist or Best Acoustic Album in the Madison Area Musicians Awards. A 2006 four-time winner in the Songwriters of Wisconsin International contest, Comer took two first place songwriting awards, one in the Folk category and one in the Adult Contemporary category. She has opened several tour shows for Willy Porter and has also appeared with national acts including Peter Mulvey, Ellis Paul, Holly Near, The Wailin' Jennys, and LJ Booth.
âAlthough her music is acoustic-based, the arrangements go much deeper, culling from classical, folk, jazz, pop, and rockâ¦.Comerâs work is diverse and dynamicâ¦Tracy Jane Comer is a musical forceâ â Kweevak.com âThe musicianship on Quietly There is near perfection. Tracy has incredible guitar skillsâ¦. Her acoustic guitar sings as crystal clearly as her voiceââ MidwestBands.com âThis singer/songwriter is key to moving the whole darn genre forward. Her sound is mature and soaked with talent throughoutâ â Smother.Net Ezine.
Rachel Nelson has received a Minnesota State Arts Board grant to videotape her live performance blend of songs, stories, and spoken word poetry, a blend she calls BardLive. Her BardLive creations include the touring environmental show Finding Our Place. While living in North Carolina, Nelson was awarded a North Caroli
