Broom Making with Instructor: Melinda Napier on Saturday, Sunday, May 8 - 9, 2010, 9:00 am - 5 pm
Broom Making with Instructor: Melinda Napier - A Gualala Arts Workshop on Saturday and Sunday, May 8 - 9, 2010, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
This will be a fun, fairly quick paced class in which students will make a hearth broom, a cobweb sweeper, and two long handled brooms (floor sweepers).
Participants will have the opportunity to learn both woven and non-woven techniques to attach the broomcorn to the handle. Instruction will also be provided on broom handle preparation and on sorting broomcorn.
Other than a few tools that each participant must bring (see materials list) all the broom making materials will be provided, including a broom press, broom needle, and a foot treadle with twine. Those who work quickly can realistically make more than four brooms and additional hemp, twine, broomcorn and handles can be purchased.
About Melinda Napier:
Five years ago, I learned broom making at the John Campbell School in Murphys, North Carolina. I became interested in broom making because I do living history and knew that this was a household item that many people would have made for themselves out of material available to them in their area. I found it to be a fun, creative outlet and useful as well! They make great and unique gifts.
I make brooms at historical events and places, and have demonstrated broom making from Montana to Colorado and many places on the West Coast.
