Helen Walkley Workshop
Helen Walkley is a contemporary dance artist, certified in Laban Movement Analyst and registered Somatic Movement Educator who has taught, created and performed for the past 33 years in the United States, Germany, Netherlands and Canada.
"Over the last few years I have developed a process of working with a soft pliable squishy ball about 15 " in diameter to teach integration and connectivity. I.E. initiation, sequencing, grounding, how to connect the limbs into the center, all the developmental patterns and change of level. I teach phrases of movement on the balls as well as provide more open scoring for students to access integration and connectivity. I may also do the same on the floor, teach some phrases as well as offer more open scoring. And the final direction of the class may head to their creating their own phrases from the physicality that has been engendered, simply exploring/improvising with their own movement, my teaching a longer phrase or some composite of the above. The squishy nature of the ball offers amazing feedback to their bodies in terms of plasticity of the body. The gentle disequilibrium they experience offers incredible feedback to sequencing and glitches in sequencing.
The work is deep, subtle, accessible, fun and .... effective. I facilitate the possibility to effect change in the patterning in their bodies and in turn they can apply this to any other movement processes/classes they are engaged in."
