LILIT
Inner-City Arts presents AXIOM Dance Theatre's evening-length production LILIT, a defiant retelling of the story of creation and destruction as seen through a gender-shifting lens.
AXIOM is an intimate performance theater experience based in contemporary dance. Founded in 2012 by Denna Thomsen & Zak Ryan Schlegel, AXIOM has quickly emerged as a pioneering dance company in the Los Angeles art community presenting subversive and unorthodox dance theatre that is both astonishing and disruptive. Physically startling, emotionally unpredictable and technically relentless, AXIOM delivers a crude portrait of history, humanism and surreality.
With all original concept, choreography, and stage/costume design, the story of LILIT physically cross-examines historical gender contradictions and amplifies ancient female howls through a deafening channel of thrashing virtuosity. Her story takes shape in the edgy silence of a hovering unmarked enemy. She is the folkloric assignment of unseen female forces and the answer to otherwise inexplicable phenomena among men.
Echoing with the classicism of prolific composers Arvo Pärt, Monteverdi and Ezio Bosso, LILIT's lush score electrifies the action with searing female voices woven together by a tapestry of piano, chamber and clamorous electronics.
In AXIOM Dance Theatre's LILIT, company dancers set the stage ablaze with boundless psychophysical determination. Marked by their bold choices and risky tenacity, the dancers execute Denna Thomsen & Zak Ryan Schlegel's rapid-fire choreography with transcending emotional precision.
