Medea
Bryan Davidson Blue Productions is proud to present the premiere season of Medea for a strictly limited run at Be Electric Studios, Bushwick. Medea, freely adapted and directed by Bryan Davidson Blue with original music by Amber docters van Leeuwen, features Lisa Ramirez, Liam Torres, and Dylan and Sean Kennedy. Lighting design by Miriam Crowe. Dramaturgy by Morgan Jenness.

This Medea is a contemporary retelling of Euripides' story about the politics of relationships. Stripped of its classical rigor, this mostly-wordless adaptation (as clean and sharp as a knife, runtime 55 minutes) is a chilling examination of heartbreak and desire, both loving and violent.

Medea (Lisa Ramirez) has been betrayed by the man she made unconscionable sacrifice for. As the sun sets, Jason (Liam Torres) returns to the home that he, Medea and their two boys, Mermeros and Pheres, shared. His language meticulous, cold; his manner orchestrated. A reunion is impossible. In real time the audience (a silent Chorus of voyeurs) witness the last hour in the lives of Mermeros and Pheres (actual brothers, Dylan and Sean Kennedy). The finale is inevitable; and deeply shocking for that very reason.

As a company. Bryan Davidson Blue Productions radically re-interpret existing texts, making theatre from theatre. Influenced by late-twentieth century visual art/performance styles Minimalism and Conceptualism, their projects explore intimacy and voyeurism, achieving maximum expression through a paucity of language, movement and design. Credits include: Spring Awakening after Frank Wedekind (Center for Performance Research), On the Misconception of Oedipus (Dixon Place), and Fewer Emergencies by Martin Crimp (Gary Snyder Project Space). Medea was specifically written for Ms. Ramirez. Mr. Davidson Blue directed her one-woman play Pas de Deux (lost my shoe) at the Cherry Lane Theater for the 15th Anniversary of the OBIE-award winning Mentor Project (Ms. Docters van Leeuwen provided original compositions).
