Concert #2 of Redwood Symphony's 30th Season Subscription
Canada College Main Theater
Redwood City, CA
Share this event:

Welcome to our 30th Season Subscription concert #2, where we will be performing:
*  Rossini: Overture to La Scala di Seta (Kristin Link, conductor)
*  Daugherty: Gee's Bend (West Coast premiere of this concerto for electric guitar, with Jon Mulvey, guitar)
*  Berlioz: Fantastic Symphony

What do you get pairing the West Coast premiere of an electric guitar concerto by the hippest composer in classical music with history's most infamous musical depiction of a love-induced drug overdose? We call it Valentine's Day, Redwood Symphony-style!

Assistant Conductor Kristin Link will get the romance off to a frisky start with Rossini's overture to La Scala di Seta (The Silken Ladder).

With Gee's Bend, we continue our long association with the music of Michael Daugherty, including performances of Metropolis Symphony (based on Superman), Dead Elvis and, most recently, Hell's Angels. Jon Mulvey joins us to play the brilliant solo part in the concerto.

One of the most revolutionary musical works of all time, the Fantastic Symphony ("fantastic" in the original sense, meaning "conceived or appearing as if conceived by an unrestrained imagination; odd and remarkable; bizarre; grotesque") was written by the 27-year old Berlioz just three years after Beethoven's death, but the two composers seem to be from different universes!

The symphony, which transpires over the course of five movements, depicts  hallucinations the composer experienced after a nearly fatal opium overdose. Many of these visions involve the woman whom Berlioz loves, but who has scorned him. The final movement recasts her as a cackling witch on a broomstick, while in another magical moment, the composer's head is chopped off by a guillotine. Just the ticket for Valentine's Day!

Maestro K will scandalize you with the sordid details in his pre-concert talk beginning at 7 p.m. (admission required to attend).

Tickets are available in advance online until the day before the performance, and otherwise at the door (subject to availability, events do sell out).  Adults: $25 (advance), $30 (at the door);  Seniors:  $20 (advance), $25 (at the door);  Students: $10 student (both).  CaƱada College students and SMCCCD employees please see the box office staff at the concert, or email us at tickets@redwoodsymphony.org for more information.
