What: Renowned architect and developer Graham Downes, whose life was tragically cut short last year, left not just a legacy of transforming the San Diego landscape through his dedication to the Bauhaus aesthetic, but a cache of superb drawings and illustrations. His free-hand drawings were filled with details that brought his work to life; he was legendary for his ability to transform abstract ideas into catalysts for neighborhood renaissance with just a few strokes of a pen.

A collection of his original architectural illustrations will be on display during a reception celebrating his work, to be followed by a round table discussion and Q&A featuring Downes' colleagues, clients and friends. The evening promises a lively examination of the reverberations that still echo in the San Diego architectural scene due to Downes' contributions. His creative agency, Graham Downes Architecture, Inc. was known for innovative solutions for urban mixed-use projects, retail and hospitality projects such as Neuhaus Ateliers, Tower 23, Hotel, Gang Kitchen and Hivehaus.

Maria Carillo, who worked with Downes for 16 years, recalls him as ever forward-thinking. "It's just amazing how we were always on the cusp of the wave," she recalls. "He was always searching for the next place; where's the next place we can make our mark?"

Downes' insatiable appetite for using travel as inspiration for his work included trips with different groups of friends and colleagues, who will join in the discussion of how Downes  known as Basher to his closest friends  brought an infectious sense of joie de vivre to the architectural, design and development community.

Who: Confirmed panelists include Jonathan Segal, a development coach and close friend of Downes; Steven Hoard, who worked closely with Downes over the years; and friend and colleague Greg Strangman, Andrew Duncan and Marianne Berg.

How: Discussion and Q&A is free and open to the public. Seating priority given to NewSchool students, faculty, alumni and board members. Complimentary catering provided by Urban Kitchen; beer and wine compliments of NewSchool of Architecture and Design.

Why: Aficionados of Downes' work and legacy are encouraged to contribute to the NewSchool's Graham Downes Summer Internship Scholarship Fund, which was established to honor his contributions to the San Diego architectural landscape. Inaugural scholarship recipients David Garcia, Alex Rodriguez and William Bustos will attend to talk about their experiences.
