Event
Psycholog For the Other Seminar
Once again, we have an exciting schedule of presentations and outstanding presenters and we are looking forward to great conversations and sharing our work and ideas together. We are very pleased to have Prof. Gilbert Garza, Ph.D. (Chair of the University of Dallas Psychology Department) as our keynote speaker. Dr. Garza writes in his keynote paper, entitled Standing and Falling: Exploring the Rupture's Impact on a Phenomenological Psychological Perspective;
"This talk will follow my attempts to bridge the Dasein-centric ontology of Heidegger's Being and Time with the Other-centric ethical philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas through my own research and teaching in psychology. What does it mean to surpass being? What is the role or place of the ethical in research? How does this impact the theory and practice of phenomenological research? What does it mean to be 'existentially' phenomenological in terms of Levinas' ethical imperative? From my own research to my teaching and my interest in quantitative research and mixed methods, I will discuss what I have drawn from these two traditions regarding the place and value of the rupture and desire."
We are also pleased to have a special discussion between Dr. Kunz and Dr. Garza as they enter into a dialogue together about how the contrast between Heideggerian ontology and Levinasian ethics can confound us, challenge us, deepen our conversations as researchers and clinicians.
Please join us for the whole weekend but also especially for our student panel on Friday evening and to have pizza and wine. This is the start of a new tradition this year and we are particularly excited to begin a dialogue with second-year Levinas students as they describe the experience of seeing Ethics from this radically Other centered-perspective for the first time. Several students will also be presenting their application of Levinas' philosophy to pedagogy and research.
We are pleased to offer up to 16 Continuing Education Credits for Saturday and Sunday sessions (Ethics credits qualifying for credentialing for mental health professionals) for this event. Please register early to secure your spot. There is limited availability.
