Chamber Folk Portland, an in-the-round happening at The Old Church

$5 to $15 Sliding Scale
All Ages Show - Bar with I.D.

Chamber Folk Portland is what you get when you take a handful of talented local musicians and put them on stage together in one of the best intimate performance venues in Portland. This brand new songwriting series' debut features singer/songwriters Catherine Feeny, Samantha Kushnick and Chris Pureka.  They will be accompanied by members from Typhoon, Portland Cello Project, & Loch Lomond who make up the house band for this evening: Amanda Lawrence (violin,Typhoon,) Shannon Steele (violin,Typhoon,) Galen Cohen (cello, Portland Cello Project,) and Kevin Jackson (arrangements, Portland Cello Project.)

The Old Church, with its acoustic qualities and inspiring ambiance offers a concert experience unlike any other.

Catherine Feeny grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, part of a tight-knit family for whom music was a uniting force. Absorbing Springsteen through her older brother, Simon and Garfunkel through her parents and The Smiths through her elder sister, she early on developed a keen ear for songwriting. Feeny received classical training in voice at the Settlement School of Music and began learning to play the guitar as a young teen. Idolizing the likes of Sinead O'Connor and the Indigo Girls, she joined several bands and began writing her own songs.

Inspired by her experience at the Occupy Wall Street protests in New York City, Feeny crafted a subtle, moving work titled, "America" that was released in 2012. The album's first single "United"  a pulsing, revolutionary anthem  caught the attention of writer/activist Eve Ensler (The Vagina Monologues), who commissioned Feeny to compose a song for her organization One Billion Rising. Feeny has played internationally as a headline act and in support of: Wilco, Belle and Sebastian, Suzanne Vega, John Prine, The Indigo Girls, Kelly Jones (Stereophonics) and Martha Wainwright.

Based in Portland, Oregon, Samantha Kushnick is a cellist, singer and songwriter in the folk tradition. She performs with the Vancouver Symphony in Washington and has toured nationally with the Portland Cello Project and Typhoon, Portland's thirteen-piece indie rock ensemble. In April, she released her debut solo record, One Room House. In addition to her solo career, Sami has collaborated with many acclaimed musicians on stage and in the studio. Among these artists are Mirah, Thao with the Get Down Stay Down, Jenny Conlee of the Decemberists, Gregory Alan Isakov, Berlin Philharmonic director Sir Simon Rattle, the Oregon Ballet Theater, and members of the Oregon Symphony. Through her travels with Typhoon, Sami has shared a stage with Andrew Bird and the Dandy Warhols and appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman. She has performed classical and contemporary works throughout North America, at venues ranging from Oregon's Britt Festival to Carnegie Hall.

Chris Pureka arrived in Portland, OR on New Year's Eve 2012. She had been touring the US for the last 10 years, Europe the last three, performing unadorned, county-inflected folk music at cozy clubs and grand theaters, grassroots festivals and urban block parties. She had crisscrossed the states sharing the stage with such artists as the Lumineers, Sera Cahoone, Y La Bamba, Martin Sexton and Ani DiFranco.

An interviewer asked Chris Pureka to sum up her music as a haiku. "Folky sorrowful songs of loneliness and hurt, longing to reunite". Her tunes have the grave Appalachian flavor of Neil Young and Gillian Welch; her guitar playing is subdued but quietly virtuosic. And her voice can be a desolate whisper or a bitter accusation. There's no comfort, for her, in the clarity of her observations."   - John Parles, THE NEW YORK TIMES
