Agachiko
Vocalist Gabrielle Agachiko has come a long way from Kenya to England to New York to Paris to Boston through her career.
With the seven piece band "Agachiko," she has finally found an ideal setting for her rich and expressive singing. The music is jazz, but not showy scat singing. Gabrielle comes from the deep story-telling tradition of Nina Simone and Abbey Lincoln, where drama joins absolute truth.
The group features a three piece horn section of surprising delicacy, with flute, soft-toned trumpet and tenor sax, along with guitar, bass and drums. Most of fhe arrangements are by saxophonist Russ Gershon, a Grammy nominated arranger and leader of the Either/Orchestra, as well as a key member of Lookie Lookie, which recently debuted at Riverwalk. The band is rounded out with some of the top players in Boston. They play beautifully together, giving Gabrielle's original songs and a few carefully chosen older tunes renditions ranging from soulful to driving to ethereal.
Here's what the critics say about the band's debut album, Yes!:
"Charismatic, searing...What's exciting about this project is not just Agachiko's vocal performances (powered by a clear, powerful instrument, knife-sharp diction, and a touch of warm vibrato), but the fully realized conception. Jon Garelick, Boston Globe
"Joni Mitchell as much as Nina Simone might relate to the nuanced readings on this her highly promising debut." Marlbank Reviews
"The songs and stories are fresh and the musicianship and vocals are as well...a very entertaining first outing." The Jazz Page
