Arts and Crafts Architecture: History and Heritage in New England
Curious about architecture and historic preservation in early 20th-century New England? Architectural historian Maureen Meister will discuss how the Arts and Crafts movement was connected with a growing interest in historic preservation first in England, where the movement culminated in William Morris's founding of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, then here in Boston, where the restoration and remodeling of pre-Industrial historic buildings played a key role. From Charles Bulfinch's Massachusetts State House, to the Old North Church and the Concord Art Center learn how Boston's Arts and Crafts architects preserved the region's heritage with well-executed ornament and innovations resulting in designs that are today New England landmarks.
