Little Brown Brother / Lily Alunan

Little Brown Brother was formed in the summer of 2006 by Ben Luis and Carlos Zialcita. In addition to the rich African-American traditions of jazz and blues, there is a definite world beat texture and attitude to the music  borrowing from the indigenous tribal Pilipino music and the heavily Spanish-influenced traditional Pilipino music from the Philippines like the Kundiman, and the Harana. The music of the band also incorporates different elements of Brazilian and Latin American music and rhythms including bossas, Latin jazz, salsa, danzones, and boleros. Little Brown Brother has performed at a number of events and venues in the Filipino community and the SF Bay Area including the Bindlestiff Theater Black & White Bindleball, the Manila Heritage Foundation's Annual Banquet, the 87th Annual Dinner of Gran Oriente Filipino in September 2007, the Pista Sa Nayon in Vallejo, the SF Pistahan, the SF Asian Heritage Street Celebration, the Fillmore Jazz Festival, the Polk Street Blues Festival, UC Berkeley International House, and the Great American Music Hall. Little Brown Brother debut CD Soul Shadows released in 2008, has received national and international airplay. <http://www.littlebrownbrother.com>

Lily Alunan   is a Bay Area vocalist born and raised in San Francisco. She started singing at the Fairmont Hotel in the City before going on to perform at other venues throughout the SF Bay Area. Her style is infused with a variety of influences ranging from Ella Fitzgerald and Barbara Streisand to Ivan Lins and Earth, Wind and Fire. This accounts for her eclectic repertoire comprised of not only the Great American Songbook, but also bossa nova, jazz, and soul. Her clear, smooth, and expressive voice, combined with her unique style take some of our most familiar standards for decidedly fresh spins. In recent years Lily has had several critically acclaimed and sold-out shows at Yoshi's Oakland, The Razz Room in San Francisco, the Zingari Lounge at the Donnatello Hotel, and the Catalina Bar & Grill in Los Angeles. Lily Alunan has release two CDs: After Hours and So In Love, both big favorites among Bay Area Pin@y jazz fans. <http://www.lilyalunan.com>

Florante Aguilar / Joel Del Rosario

Florante Aguilar is one the leading figures championing Philippine music art forms in the USA and international markets today. He advances and popularizes Philippine music through the medium of film, recordings and live performances. His arrangements and compositions successfully craft the right balance between respect and redefinition of a tradition. Born in Manila, Aguilar grew up in Cavite province where he learned to play the octavina in a Rondalla group. By 16 he was enrolled at the University of the Philippines College of Music where he was trained as a classical musician. He later moved to New York under scholarship to study at the Manhattan School of Music.  He received his Bachelor of Music Degree at the San Francisco Conservatory for Music. His constant search for a tradition-based contemporary Filipino sound led him to champion Harana music - songs used in the now-vanished Filipino courtship ritual of serenading, and the subject of the award-winning 2012 documentary, Harana: The Search for the Lost Art of Serenade, which he wrote and produced with his wife and partner, Fides Enriquez. Aguilar has released several CD albums under the private label New Art Media. These include Introducing The Harana Kings (2012), The Manila Galleon Guitar Music (2010), The Art of Harana (2003/2008), Paraiso (2007), Tipanan - A Celebration of the Philippine Guitar (2006), and The Barbary Coast Guitar Duo (2005. As a composer, Aguilar uses strong Philippine motifs in a modern context, and has been granted numerous composition awards from prestigious institutions including the theater works Lalawigan - A Tagalog Song Cycle in 2009 and Aswang - Tales of Lore in 2013.  <http://www.florante.org>

Joel Del Rosario   Born in San Francisco to Filipino immigrants who came in the 70's.   Joel Del Rosario's music has elements of straight ahead jazz, but fusing them with R&B, classical, and hip-hop, guitarist/producer Joel Del Rosario's music exudes the diversity of San Francisco's cosmopolitan culture.  This uniqueness has the world listening to this young jazz guitarist, and won him the title of Coffee Talk Jazz Radio's Guitarist of the Year.  Often likened to the playing styles of George Benson and Norman Brown, Joel gives tribute to the mellower side of jazz, but adds a youthful edge. Nominated for "Best Jazz Duet" (with keyboardist Surewill) at the 2012 Los Angeles Music Awards, Del Rosario has traveled nationwide, performing at various well known jazz venues while producing music for, and alongside his jazz contemporaries. Currently jDR, as he is often called, has released several top ranking projects:  Coast to Coast which was included in the list of Top 10 Jazz Albums of 2010 at Talking Smooth Jazz Radio, and Side by Side released 2013. Del Rosario has been featured on various projects including Billboard's charting single By the Bay by Cal Harris Jr.  www.joeldelrosario.com

Raq Filipina / Subla with Danny Kalanduyan

Raq's music is a unique mix of Filipino roots with Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, Caribbean and chill electronica sounds. Her songs are mysterious and uplifting, innovative and modern, nostalgic and iconoclastic. Her voice is sultry, haunting and sensous. She's an award winning composer and performer who grew up in a musical family in the San Juan neighborhood of Manila, singing and dancing from a young age. Since her arrival in the United States as a young woman, she has sung, danced and performed in a range of styles, earning recognition and numerous awards along the way. In early 2010, the legendary world music producer Greg Landau contacted her to work on a new project combining roots music of the Philippine Islands with eclectic rhythms and a touch of electronica. The chemistry of Raq Filipina's compositions and Landau's innovative production was immediate and powerful, and they have recorded a unique album.  Raq Filipina currently has two CDs: Soy Filipina and Filipina Roots. With the completion of her latest recording, she has come full circle, forging a new direction in Filipino world music while echoing her roots in San Juan.   <http://www.raqfilipina.com>

Subla, featuring Bo Razon and Kulintang Master Danny Kalanduyan. SUBLA (neo-kulintang) is a San Francisco-based group dedicated to combining the traditional gong music of the Southern Philippines with contemporary musical elements.  SUBLA is composed of kulintang master Danongan Kalanduyan on kulintang, saronay and dabakan; Bo Razon on guitars, kutiyapi, and various stringed instruments; Chris Trinidad on bass & percussion; Frank Holder on drums, dabakan, & percussion. Kulintang is the gong music tradition of indigenous peoples in the southern Philippines. It is also the name of the gong set which functions as the main instrument in the gong ensemble. SUBLA is dedicated to exploring the Kulintang music of the Maguindanao and Maranao peoples specifically and experimenting on its fusion with contemporary and global music elements. SUBLA means 'beyond' in the Maguindanao language. The diverse musical influences within the group are understandably interesting: Traditional Kulintang Music of the Maguindanao and Maranao people; World Music; Contemporary Jazz; King Crimson; Jimi Hendrix; and AfroCuban music. <http://www.sublamusic.com>
