LOS ANGELES, CA; - World renowned Brazilian Choreographer, Rosangela Silvestre, and Dance Ethnologist, Kimberly Miguel Mullen, M.A. collaborate in the world premiere of the interactive dance duet Essensibility: A Performance of Essence and Sensibility. This imaginative and inspirational performance takes audiences on a journey through the African diaspora, evoking the forces of nature through the interplay of music, song and dance. Audiences will witness, and take part in, the energetic transformation and manifestation of sacred dances guided by a polyrhythmic soundtrack of colorful rhythms. The diverse all-star cast of performers originating from Brazil, Italy and the US, not only include two of the most prominent figures in the world dance scene, but a stellar line up of live musicians as well. Master Percussionist, Mark Lamson, of the legendary CD Bata Ketu, will lead an ensemble of talented drummers, including Stevie Wonders lead drummer, Fausto Cuevas, and Afro-Cuban Drum Masters, Luca Brandoli and Joe Addington. Additional music arranged by Film Composer, Dexter Story, providing a context for the ethereal exploration for the piece.
Produced by Mullen, Essensibility is based on the solo work, "Faces of Nature" by Rosangela Silvestre. This is the first onstage collaboration between the two artists since the April 2009 release of Mullens latest dance workout DVD by Acacia, "Dance and Be Fit: Lower Body Burn & Abs Burn." Silvestre was the Choreographic Consultant for the project. Mullen has trained with Silvestre and performed her choreographies since 2004 as a member of Viver Brasil Dance Company. As a solo artist, Mullen performs with legendary Cuban conguero Francisco Aguabella. With a Master of Arts from UCLA Department of World Arts & Culture, Mullen has conducted extensive research and dance training in Cuba, Brazil, Puerto Rico, and Trinidad and Tobago since 1994. In 2005, Mullen embarked on a successful DVD dance career as a choreographer and lead talent renowned for crossing over traditional dance forms into mainstream markets. Her first dance workout DVD, "Dance and Be Fit: Brazilian Body" was awarded Best Dance DVD 2009 for Health Magazines Americas Healthiest Pick. Mullen greatly acknowledges her rigorous dance training with Silvestre as a major part of her success with her DVD series.
Rosangela Silvestre, a native of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil is gaining global recognition as one of the great visionaries of world dance for her comprehensive training system known as The Silvestre Technique and for her innovative choreographies. Since 1982, Silvestre has set choreography on Brazils premiere company, Bale Folklorico da Bahia as well as Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Company, Ballet Hispanico Repertory Company, American Academy of Ballet, Roots of Brazil, DanceBrazil, Viver Brasil, and more. She has rigorously researched dance and music in India, Egypt and Cuba as part of her ever-evolving and eclectic movement palette. Silvestre will perform in Los Angeles on the tail end of her world tour to Argentina, Japan, and Europe.
Essensibility is the combined energetic forces of Silvestre, as essence, and Mullen as sensibility, and the intersecting paths that create a language of universality. The performance concludes with an open forum, to allow for an exchange of question and answer with the performers and audience members.
