Matthew Carter at SJSU
San Jose State University School of Art and Design presents Matthew Carter
Matthew Carter is considered to be the most important type designer of our time, and his work is seen by most people in the Western world every day. He is Co-founder of Bitstream and now Principal of Carter & Cone with Cherie Cone in Cambridge, Massachusetts. As well as designing type for magazines such as Time, The Washington Post, The New York Times, the Boston Globe, Wired, and Newsweek, he is one of the few designers to also be featured in such publications. After many years of creating type for print, he pioneered the design of fonts for use on screen, including Georgia and Verdana for Microsoft. For more than thirty years he has been Senior Critic at Yale University School of Art in the Graphic Design MFA program, and was typographical advisor to Her Majesty's Stationery Office in London and Norwich, England in the 1980s. Most recently he designed Yale, a signage typeface for Yale University, and redesigned the typographic identity of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Carter received the AIGA medal in 1995, the 2005 SOTA Typography Award, and is a member of the highly select Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI).
