25: A Tribute
When my father, Bob Hulme, died in 1989, at the age of 36 from skin cancer, he believed neither of his daughters would ever be singers.  You see, he was a musician and he wanted more than anything to know that his children carried his gift of music.  I was 11 and didn't know that I could sing.

One day, at the age of 13, I woke up and it was a miracle!  I could sing.  And I never stopped.

25 years later, as I honor his legacy with this tribute concert, I proclaim, "Dad, I sing!"

About VanNessa:
VanNessa Hulme is anything but a typical opera singer. She has been hailed internationally and at home for her uniqueness and ability to sing all genres, from classical to musical theater, gospel to R&B. As a versatile stage actor, VanNessa has found herself performing both opera and musical theater and has performed over 150 lead and supporting roles.

"Her performance was bodacious and vivacious. Her vocal range was breathtaking, reaching notes in the upper soprano with great ease and a calm countenance." (Rosalinda in Die Fledermaus, Pasadena Star News)

"The best voice in the cast was the full-blooded Ada of soprano VanNessa Hulme." (Ada, Die Feen, Los Angeles Times)

"a spirited Tosca with a powerful yet supple voice. She delineates the arc of the character with emotional force." (Tosca, San Fernando Valley News)

In the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions she was a Western Regional Finalist in 2003 and 2004, and 2007. Also in 2003, VanNessa was the Winner of the Llangollen Eisteddfodd Music Festival Music Theater Singer of the World and a finalist in the Opera Competition. She was honored to sing at the event's Final Concert, televised on the BBC.

She received a Bachelor of Music degree in Voice from Grand Canyon University and a Master of Music degree from California State University, Northridge. In 2015, VanNessa will return to school to finish her Master of Social Work, with a specialty in Death, Dying and Bereavement. She hopes to eventually work with those making their transition and the families left behind.

VanNessa is also passionate about production and management. In 2009, VanNessa was named the Artistic Director of Founder's Forum, an arts non-profit in Los Angeles. Here she honed her skills as producer and director and fleshed out a vision that would come to life later. VanNessa then co-founded Beyond the Stage, a collaborative arts non-profit organization in Los Angeles, in the spring of 2012.  In May, VanNessa celebrated her 150th project as producer/director.

VanNessa is known for her creative music adventures and is currently working on several unique projects, including a one-woman show, "Am I Alive Yet?" chronically the hilarious and outrageous stories of her life.  Along with her fiancĂ©, pianist Derek Silbermann, VanNessa has reset a large number of 1940's jazz-musical songs into modern arrangements and will be recording her debut CD in 2015, featuring these arrangements.  Also in the pipes, is  "aRia&B," a two-part project: standard operatic arias recorded with orchestra and a re-working of the same opera arias in jazz r&b settings.

VanNessa appears often around Southern California as a soloist in both opera and jazz, the Soprano section leader for The Verdi Chorus in Santa Monica, serves as the Contemporary Worship Team Leader at St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church in Simi Valley, California, and is the owner of a successful music studio in the San Fernando Valley.

But the most important part of this story has nothing to do with music...

VanNessa is an avid seeker of truth, a lover of worldkind, a faithful friend and a vivacious liver of life.   She has dedicated her life to reaching, helping, and giving to others, through her music and laughter, and hopes to see you at "25: A Tribute" to celebrate living!
