Intro to Wine with Sicily and the Tre Venezie
The Tre Venezie in the Northeast and Sicily in the baking sun of the South, might seem to have little in common when considering their language, history, or climate, and yet their wines both exemplify the same revolutions that are rocking the world of Italian wine today. Traditional varietals, like Nerello Mascalese, or Tokai Friulano compete side by side with Syrah, Cabernet Franc, and Riesling, while the common wisdom of modern squeaky-clean fermentation is threatened by a return to the old ways of wild fermentation and minimal intervention. Our first wine class of the year will be set against this backdrop as a starting point to discuss major styles, taste descriptors, vintage characteristics and winemaking techniques of the greater wine world. We'll start the night with a basic refresher of things any wine lover must know, including common misconceptions, newcomers to our wine classes can then expect to focus on describing their preferences accurately and succinctly to assist in future wine purchases. People with a bit of experience can treat the class as a classic wines of Italy course with representative (and surprising) examples from these two contrasting regions, with an emphasis on hard to find gems and food pairing. To facilitate comparative tasting, we do ask for this class that you bring your own 6 wine glasses. We will only be able to provide plastic cups for people who show up sans glassware. Please don't miss out, seats fill quickly!
