The 2014 AIA|LA ProDev Series: Zero Net Energy Buildings
The 2014 AIA|LA ProDev Series: Zero Net Energy Buildings

Learning Units:  1.5 LUs (60 minute presentation plus Q&A)

Where: AIA|LA Chapter Office
3780 Wilshire Blvd. Suite 800
Los Angeles, CA 90010

When: Wednesday, October 8th, 2014. 4-5:30pm.

Zero Net Energy (ZNE) buildings produce as much energy as they consume over the course of a year using clean on-site renewable energy sources. They are being constructed in most climate zones of the United States using readily available strategies and technologies. In some cases, they are being built at little or no incremental cost over comparable conventional quality buildings. California is nearly ideal for ZNE and is leading the nation in this approach.

However, this emerging concept and is not widely known and there are few structures that have been measured and verified. Yet, policies are being established today that will profoundly alter the way we design and construct buildings in the state so that all new buildings will be ZNE by 2030.

This session will explore the various definitions of ZNE, policies and regulations that influence ZNE building design, the role of energy modeling plus examples of constructed and proven ZNE buildings.

Learning Outcomes:
Basic introduction to the Zero Net Energy concept and various definitions
State policies and regulations regarding Zero Net Energy buildings
Techniques - How energy efficiency measures and renewable energy generation are applied to buildings
The role of energy modeling and the integrated design process.
Review of case studies of constructed ZNE buildings.
