Sam Cassidy:
Minneapolis, MN - Sometimes it just takes a while for things to come into focus. Sam Cassidy began writing for his debut full length Debts a few years back after a long trip and a rough year. Plenty of time and energy went into these songs, with a few false starts along the way. It took all that to steer the record in the right direction.
Recorded in fits and spurts beginning in March of 2013 in Minneapolis, Debts calls on both personal experience and accounts of friends and strangers. With the release of a split 7" on May 13th and two more songs currently available online, these tracks serve as a preview to the LP.
Included on the 7" is the track "Tell Him". It features the All Night Canyons - a group of talented musicians pulled together for these sessions including Jeremy Hanson (Tapes 'n Tapes, Actual Wolf), Rob Skoro (Mason Jennings, All Tomorrows Petty), Steve Bosmans (Charn), and Aaron "Hix" Lee (Red Daughters, Dirt Road Ramblers). This group also backs Cassidy on the track "Sleepercar"-a song that tells of hitting the highway and clearing your head- offered as a download with the 7".
The version of "Hard Road" offered as a download is a B-side from the not-yet released full length. It was tracked live with the Red Daughters Band. This pack of wild animals includes Tony Beres, Mark Hanson, Hix, Charlie Murlowski, and Ryan Zickermann. Hard Road talks not about travel, but of the day to day search for something worthwhile.
While these songs offer separate approaches, there is a bond that holds them and the entire record together. It's that constant search and struggle that keeps life interesting. He's hoping it all works out.
BBGUN:
BBGUN began in a sunny living room, over coffee, on a Friday morning.
Before long, that first Friday morning turned into every Friday morning. Longtime friends Neal Perbix and Al Church began the songwriting sessions with few intentions. Just good friends getting together to play music.
Both had distinct styles, matured over years of fronting their own projects. But together, their collaboration took a new turn. BBGUN leans towards a sunny, poppy, alt-country vibeweaving lyrics both contemplative and playful and harmonies both sophisticated and singable. The pair's powerful songwriting connection found common themes within similar experiences growing up in small-town Minnesota. Biking down to the grocery store for a can of pop, fishing off the dock, playing music in their parents' basement. Those commonalities helped the pair tap into a carefree feeling. Complemented by Jeremy Hanson's expert, easy drumming, their rock 'n' roll tunes sound best coming from the speakers of a pickup truck.
In between drinking beers and swimming in the lake, the three crafted a debut album that Minneapolis' City Pages called "stunning."
"The sound that eventually emerged was instantly inviting but diverse," critic Rob van Alstyne wrote. "Songs like 'Pretend' tilt toward classic country, favoring gently strummed acoustic guitars and honky-tonk harmonies. Elsewhere, the sinewy 'Heavy' embodies the barrel-chested bravura of Springsteen-saluting bar-rock. Occasional string and horn section overdubs add a new layer of spot-the-classic influence, with a tune like the swooning orchestral-inclined ballad 'It's the Way' recalling Brian Wilson at his bummed-out best."
With an eye toward the carefree days of youth, BBGUN's debut album documents the anxiety and surprising joys of trading in late-night cigarettes for a kind of settling down.
