Dance Marathon

Dance Marathon is the participatory dance show that is taking the world by storm! Dance Marathon is inspired by the physically grueling phenomena from the Great Depression where destitute couples would try to win prizes by outlasting everyone else.

Created as a Harbourfront Centre commission by bluemouth inc., a New York City/Toronto theatre collective, Dance Marathon is a genuine endurance contest and staged performance event where hopeful amateurs can mix with performers under the direction of floor judges and the merciless ticking of the clock to shape participation theatre. Those with two left feet can simply sit back to enjoy the fancy footwork!

As the evening begins, participants are given numbered pinnies when they enter the venue. Dancers bring their own partners or find one on the dance floor. In true dance marathon tradition, more and more couples are eliminated as the night wears on. As the dance floor--complete with live band led by a jazz diva MC--thins out, the surrounding audience continues to grow.

In this BC premiere of Dance Marathon, Boca del Lupo and bluemouth inc. work together deliver an experience of participation theatre for all ages that will be a trial of endurance and survival, and feed the insatiable appetite for competition.
