Legacy Film Festival on Aging
We are celebrating the 4th Annual Legacy Film Festival on Aging. We are showing 8 separate programs of films during the three days, September 12-14, 2014, at the New People Cinema, 1746 Post St, in Japan Town, San Francisco.
We are showcasing little-known, independent short films, documentaries and feature length narrative stories made in USA, as well as China, India, Israel, Uruguay, France, and Germany. There will be a post-screening Q&A for each program.
The Opening Night program, titled Three Perspectives on Growing Old(er) begins at 5:30 pm, with two films from the UK, one from the Bay Area. The Bay Area filmmaker will be present.
Several of the programs will also have filmmakers present, and in one case, the family and the film's subject will be present.
The films' subjects are about Love: a 5-minute documentary called Marriage, an Israeli film on a spouse's devotion to a husband suffering a debilitating disease; a film from Uruguay where the filmmaker interviews older adult couples about life, loss, love, sex.The French feature film presents a 60-year-old retired dentist who falls for her computer teacher, who is decades younger. And so on!
We wil end the festival with Shirley Knight and Tom Skerritt in a charming story about this older woman (Shirley) who is disgusted with her current life in a comfortable retirement home, and decides to do something about it! And that is walking 80 miles on foot, alone, along Oregon's Redwood Highway to the coast of Oregon to see the ocean for the first time in 45 years and attend her granddaughter's wedding as an unexpected guest. Along the way, she meets an extraordinary cast of characters and discovers that you're never too old to learn something about life and about yourself. Through the festival films, the theme is: Yes, there are incredible difficult losses, but here are people who have triumphed over these challenges.
