Oakland Zoo Lunch and Tour
Slow Food and the Oakland Zoo?? Do they go together? You bet they do!!
Both organizations share the same spirit. The Oakland Zoo is one of only 200 accredited members (out of 1400 facilities nation wide) of the American Zoological and Aquarium Society. No animals are taken from the wild... rather they are either rescued or bred at an accredited zoo. This process keeps an animal gene equivalent of a bean or seed library project. The Oakland Zoo donates money to a snare removal project in Africa, to Jane Goodall's Chimp project, to Cynthia Moss' Elephant project and participates in a Thailand Hornbill (bird) breeding project to build substitute breeding alternatives for lost trees due to deforestation. The Oakland Zoo recycles 85 +% of its waste, including herbivore poop. It has lots of solar panels to produce much its own power. The Zoo, through its gift shop, sponsors third world women's craft projects. The Zoo sponsors ecological education through a Conservation Zoomobile project which teaches conservation at schools in the East Bay. It runs a Zoo Camp program which grants scholarships to inner-city children. It even serves fair trade, shade grown coffee at its cafe. All of this while giving its animals a humane, natural and safe environment. (The elephants have 6 1/2 acres of roaming room.)
Like Slow Food, the Oakland Zoo is concerned about sustainability, ecological justice, habitat preservation and improvement, bio-diversity and education. So what could be better than to have a docent lead tour of the Zoo to become familiar with its virtues and have fun at the same time. David Lee will serve as a docent at this event. Children are welcome!
The tour will be preceded by a seasonal, local catered lunch from Market Hall, to include an antipasti platter, pasta, coleslaw, wine, non-alcoholic beverages, and dessert.
Lunch will be served at the Zoo Auditorium at noon. To minimize waste, please bring your own plates, utensils, and glasses. The auditorium has a small kitchen, you may wash your wares after lunch, and leave them in the auditorium during the tour.
This event is limited to 40.
Cost is $20 for adults, $12 for children ages 2-14, plus zoo admission ($7.50 general, $5.50 for children ages 2-14, and adults ages 55 and up). Children less than 2 are free.
