Ya'el Tap's 2nd Choreographers Collective
Under the direction of Julie Rubin, The Ya'el Tap Dance Company's monthly "Choreographers Collective" gives aspiring, emerging, or established choreographers of all dance genres the opportunity to present their works, or works in progress, in a safe, relaxed, and nurturing setting. This showcase allows choreographers to perform and experiment with their ideas in front of a welcoming audience without boundaries. Our first showcase was a wild success and we expect the same of our next one!
This month, check out pieces by the following choreographers:
Julie Rubin Nicole Ohr Jessica Lewis Andrew Jannetti Holly Maddock Catherine Baggs Rebekka Nodhturft Deborah Chambers Takuya Fujikawa
Admission: $12 in advance $15 at the door
Check out descriptions of the pieces below...
Choreographer: Julie Rubin (Ya'el Tap) "Androgynous" "Androgynous" is a creative dance expression that portrays the story of Lilith, a Sumerian demoness who some considered to be one half of the male/female creation in G-d's image (in Genesis 1) as opposed to the separate characters of Adam & Eve (in Genesis 2).
"Salaam" Peace will soon be upon us and on everyone. Peace Upon us and upon the whole world Salaam, Salaam
Choreographer: Nicole Ohr "Birds Flying High" "Birds Flying High" is a tap solo. The solo depicts how love can have two sides; one side being quiet, calm and comforting and the other side making you want to scream out in joy.
"Sing Sing Sing" "Sing Sing Sing" is a group tap piece. The scatting within the music is greatly reflected in the choreography.
Choreographer: Jessica Lewis "Bedtime Stories" (Excerpts) These two excerpts from Jessica Lewis' "Bedtime Stories" use her technique of "emotional character trajectory work" to bring this project to life. The project in its final form will be a suite of dances based on the songs and poems that formed Ms. Lewis' nightly bedtime routine. Using this raw material she has begun to create a piece that incorporates multidisciplinary techniques, such as sound art, theater, and dance, in conjunction with her movement vocabulary, which is heavily informed by the work of Mr. Andrew Jannetti, and modern choreographers such as Anna Sokolow.
Choreographer: Andrew Jannetti "Margaret's Lament" A lamentation on loss and affliction, a solo dancer emerges from the darkness in a prayerful and reverent attempt to come to terms with the loss of a loved one.
Choreographer: Holly Maddock "Genius is the Recovery of Childhood at Will" This piece is about recalling ones childhood memories and behavior. Based off the different development patterns, it is a look back into the mindset that one has as a child.
Choreographer: Catherine Baggs "Dream of Jazz" "Dreams of Jazz" is a theater dance piece. The dancers are the manifestation of the audience's dream where old style jazz meets new age pop culture.
Choreographer: Rebekkah Nodhturft (Awaken Dance Theater) "Lovers Play" "Lovers Play" is a piece about letting going and being so comfy and silly and happy in a relationship that you simply experience joy.
"Only in America" "Only in America" is a reminder of the tragedy of school shootings, which are unfortunately so common in the USA. Beginning with a classroom scene, it morphs into a scene of chaos and violence, followed by mourning. It ends with an eerie visit by politicians, perhaps Congress or the even the NRA, and explores their apathy, or in the case of the latter --- extreme opposition to the idea of implementing stronger gun control laws.
Choreographer: Deborah Chambers "On the Outside Looking In" "On the Outside Looking In" follows the journey of a person dealing with their failures, triumphs and perception through the eyes of others. This work is based on how we allow the opinions of others to influence us positively or negatively.
Choreographer: Takuya Fujikawa "Soldier" Takuya and his 10 dancers will only be in NYC for 5 days, so come check them out while you can! They will be performing a hip hop/street jazz fusion piece entitled "Soldier," which is about the joy of dance. Takuya believes that dance is the expression of our soul and that we should all enjoy the moments in life through dance!
