Kevin Kling, nationally known storyteller, returns to Open Eye this August for his eighth annual year of creating a work on the Open Eye stage. Since 2007, Mr. Kling has explored timely themes that have ranged from trauma recovery ("Come and Get It", 2007/08 and "Flight" 2009), to fairy tales ("Folks and Heroes", 2010), to religion ("Joice Rejoice" 2011), to politics ("Politico", 2012), and the human/animal bond ("Humanimal", 2013). He will again be joined with his perennial collaborators Jacqueline Ultan, and Michelle Kinney with direction by Michael Sommers to create an evening of story, song, and imagery.
In this years' production, "Hammer, Anvil, and Stirrup" (named for the tiny powerful bones of the inner ear), the trio explores through word and music the science of waves in sound, light, water, and emotion. How do these waves affect us on conscious, spiritual, and physical levels with their power of healing? Kling's innate sense of observation brings an astute perspective with stories that are always timely. "Hammer, Anvil, and Stirrup" is a mixture of folktales, historical accounts of both science and personal, along with necessary persistent postulations. Come enjoy this show to make for a perfect summer outing, for when you leave you will walk out into a whole new world, a world rich in sounds, patterns, momentum and music.
Those of you who know Mr. Kling's work through MPR broadcasts or performances at the Fitzgerald Theater, Open Eye's intimate 90-seat venue provides the rare opportunity to hear this story concert up close, as if he were sitting in your own living room. Kevin Kling is a superb storyteller whose tales can revive a soul and, with the music of Ultan and Kinney, this work will go right to your core. It may be just what you need.
