Waiting For Lefty - by Clifford Odets
Capitol Hill Arts Center Seattle, WA
Clifford Odets' "Waiting for Lefty" tells the stories of everyday people in 1930's America, who rise above the capitalist mess they've inherited and take control of their destinies. Beginning and ending in a meeting hall, the story tells of the gradual movement towards a strike for a group of taxi drivers. In scenes played out in living rooms, a doctor's office, a chemical lab, and the Union hall, "Waiting for Lefty" is at once intensely private and personal, and unabashedly political. Composed of love scenes, fights and rabble-rousers, the story ends with the resounding chorus to "STRIKE!" a moment of challenge for blue-collar America to rise past individual fears, band together, place faith in mass demonstration, and live for oneself.
"There is scarcely a wrong line, a wrong gesture in Mr. Odets' plays. Nothing has become transparent or cheaply crafted over the intervening years, because it was all thickness to begin with, writhing tissue, works of impulse . . . Our heritage is better than we thought." - Walter Kerr, The New York Times
