Innovating with/in Tradition: Noh Theater
Two-part session:
June 28th, 10:00am-2:30pm
June 29th, 9:00am-12:30pm

The focus of the Physical Character workshop will be to discover the clear power and surprising breath of the performer's mask. Intrinsically, Nohgaku (accomplished entertainment) engages the physical imagination, of both the performer and the audience.  Participants will experience the meticulous body articulation, concentration and focus a traditional Kyogen dance (komai) demands. Following the identification of a few underlying foundations, participants will explore and experiment with these valuable performer's tools to create their own, new piece working with/in the tradition. Nohgaku's inherent principles are time-tested, unique and come together to create a refined and powerful stage aesthetic. We will discover the unique lyrical nature of each individual performer and expand their dynamic struggle for theatricality.

Support for this session is provided by the City of Los Angeles' Department of Cultural Affairs, and by the Japan Foundation, Los Angeles
