Philadelphia Folk Society Comes to New Jersey: Featuring Sonoma Sound, Daniel White & Sharon Goldman
The Philadelphia Folk Society Presents: Sonoma Sounds, Daniel White & Sharon Goldman
Known worldwide for its over-50-year strong Philadelphia Folk Festival, now Philly Folk is headed to New Jersey -- presenting a full evening of original, acoustic-based folk, blues, and roots music at Metuchen's Old Franklin Schoolhouse, as part of the Metuchen Folk Weekend. All three acts are members of the Philadelphia Folk Society's Music Co-op.
Sonoma Sound plays a sonic tapestry of original roots music
with threads of Americana, Blues, Folk, Jazz and World rhythms that blurs the boundaries of musical category. Their live performance is sung in English and
Spanish, is a fusion of conscious lyrics sung over steady rhythms with wandering melodic solos. It is music unlike anything you have heard before. Jay Popky on vocals & guitars, Paul Downie on vocals, drums & percussion, Dean Sophocles on piano & organ, Jake L'Armand on violin, Robert Veith on the five string electric bass and Will Paynter on vocals, acoustic bass, melodica, harmonica and percussion.
Daniel White was born in a small town outside of Philadelphia and was exposed to Bach, Beethoven and Mo-town recordings at an early age. He played in the Philadelphia jazz scene for several years before attending school in Boston. Then, he traveled across the country, stopping in Asheville, North Carolina; Austin, Texas; and Santa Cruz, California. The solitude of the hills of Felton provided the perfect environment to craft preliminary sketches of his diverse repertoire of originals and cover songs. Currently, Daniel is performing in clubs on the East Coast (Philadelphia and New York City) and in Chicago as well as venues abroad in Amsterdam and Israel.
Sharon Goldman is a Metuchen, New Jersey-based singer-songwriter known around the Tri-State area for her vivid imagery, inventive storytelling and clever, catchy melodies. Her songs have been spun on folk, public and college radio stations around the US including New York's WFUV; she was honored in 2011 as a Falcon Ridge Folk Festival Emerging Artist; and has performed in coffeehouses and clubs from Rockwood Music Hall in New York City to World Cafe Live in Philadelphia. Her fourth solo album, SILENT LESSONS was released in January 2014 and in her spare time, she writes a popular blog, Songwriting Scene.
