Landlady is the Brooklyn-born brainchild of Adam Schatz, a vision completed by Mikey Freedom Hart, Ian Chang, Ian Davis, and Booker Stardrum. A band quietly built upon one self-released record and a history of heart-pounding hometown live shows, Landlady has turned up the volume on its own evolved sound with the creation of 'Upright Behavior,' the new album out this Spring on Hometapes.
For their debut album as Star Rover, guitarist Will Graefe and drummer Jeremy Gustin began with the music of John Fahey and ended up in their own corner of a skewed, over-driven, weird America. Star Rover's original compositions use John Fahey's guitar playing as a launching point for interstellar explorations. The title track on Western Winds Bitter Christians is a call to attention, a blast of grungy backwoods distortion. It's crooked like an Appalachian fiddle tune, sour like a Mississippi lament, but still brash and majestic.
KRISTIN SLIPP and DOV MANSKI
Brooklyn-based vocalist, improviser and composer Kristin Slipp has a deep understanding and appreciation for the human voice and its limitless capacity to convey, emote, and transport. A Maine native, Slipp has performed all around North America and Europe, often with the "avant-pop" band for which she sings, composes, and plays glockenspiel, Cuddle Magic. Dov Manski is a pianist, composer and teacher who has performed professionally for over a decade. Manski has shared the stage with many notable musicians including Bill McHenry, Dave Holland, John McNeil, Cecil McBee, Steve Davis, George Garzone, Bob Moses, and Allan Chase.
