2009 Island Creek Oyster Festival
**THIS EVENT WILL SELLOUT. PLEASE PURCHASE TICKETS EARLY**
The Island Creek Oyster Festival, an afternoon-long, sustainable event, is set to take place September 12th, 2009 from 3-11 p.m. on Duxbury Beach. This years festival will highlight the best in local oysters, food, music, and beer. Now in its fourth year, the premier food event is on track to be bigger, better, and more ecologically friendly than ever before. As many as 3,000 attendees will flood Duxbury Beach for the afternoon-long event where up to 40,000 Island Creek oysters will be donated and shucked by IC farmers as well as dozens of volunteer shuckers from up and down the East Coast. In addition, 18 of Bostons most celebrated chefs including Jasper White, Jody Adams, and Chris Schlesinger will be plating small bites of dishes made with locally sourced ingredients like striped bass, dayboat scallops, Island Creek-raised pigs, and more. Guests can enjoy Harpoon Brewery beers, three lively local bands, and a family-friendly kids zone that will be open to all attendees from 3-6 p.m. This year, the Island Creek Oyster Festival is attempting to go as green as possible. The Festival plans to donate all oyster shells to the New Hampshire oyster shell recycling project; chefs and beverage sponsors will use compostable plates, glassware, and utensils; and attendees will be asked to participate by lending a hand in all recycling efforts. About the Island Creek Oyster Festival The Island Creek Oyster Festival was created as a way for the Island Creek family to raise money and give back to the local community. Since then, it has steadily grown into a premier food and family event. Consumers, restaurateurs, press, and oyster lovers from the Northeast and beyond flood Duxbury each fall to take part. The Festival is the principle fundraiser for the Island Creek Oyster Foundation which will give a portion of proceeds to local charities including The Duxbury Beach Reservation, Crossroads for Kids, and the Duxbury Bay Maritime School. About the Island Creek Oyster Foundation The Island Creek Oyster Foundation was created to support projects in line with the core values of the Island Creek family. This year, the Foundation is excited to announce that it will begin funding an aquaculture project in the country of Tanzania. Working alongside the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute and two non-governmental organizations located in Tanzania, the Foundation will place Island Creek farmers alongside locally based, African farmers on the island of Zanzibar to help with the construction of a shellfish hatchery and the eventual growout of a native shellfish population to create a sustainable protein source for a number of local communities.
