Br'er Rabbit Presents: A Summer Stringband Solstice
Br'er Rabbit (Bellingham, WA)
Though all four members of Br'er Rabbit grew up running around wooded areas of the same small town in the farthest Northwest corner of Washington state, brothers Zach and Nathan didn't meet Miranda, the third founding member, until they had all ended up in New York City. This kind of backyard folk seasoned by the edge, polish and fervor of big-city inclinations is at the root of the style they call folk-stomp Americana. The group revamps classic string band instrumentation with homespun percussion and the unique integration of six-string ukulele and cello. With their widely varying influences, three distinct vocal styles and copious amounts of foot-stomping, they demonstrate a sound and presence that's at once original and familiar, appealing to audiences of all generations and genres. Voted best band in their home city of Bellingham, WA in 2013, they have quickly risen to local notoriety and now tour extensively throughout the U.S. The band recently recorded their first full-length album at the famed Bear Creek Studio (The Lumineers, Fleet Foxes), partially funded by Kickstarter campaign and released independently in March 2014. The Wild North is available now on iTunes, Spotify, and at brerrabbitmusic.com.
Moongrass (Bellingham, WA)
6 boys from the Nooksack delta singin' songs about drinking, loneliness, existential dread, the urge to escape the tragedy of everyday life, fear of death, and other american themes. We play music from deep places within us, and we love each other like brothers, therefore our music is good and we enjoy playing it. We will play in your bars, your punk houses, your weddings, the parties on your farm. And if we aren't invited in, we will sing and dance on the street.
The Moonshine (Portland, OR)
The Moonshine is an idea on the rise. An incandescent blend of guitar, autoharp, fiddle, banjo and upright bass. A rhythmic network of folks and songs from everywhere and nowhere.
Started in the winter of 2012, The Moonshine began crafting a style all their own based on applying traditional stringband techniques to the unconventional, yet instantly familiar writing of Michael Gerard Levasseur. This is music born of the endless wonder of the open countryside, just as it is music meant to be heard blaring from brightly lit dancehalls on crowded city streets. During a given performance one is as likely to hear a modernist take on a Carter Family song from the 20's, as an anti-GMO song written in 2012 with a distinctly old-time feel.
