An Evening With Octavia
Born and raised in Miami, Fl, Octavia began singing at the age of three. Her first audience was the congregation of her grandfather's church. By her teenage years, she was nicknamed "Songbird".
Early on, it was clear that Octavia had developed a love for music, as she was accepted into the Center for Performing Arts in the 5th grade and then before entering high school, was accepted into P.A.V.A.C. (the
Performing and Visual Arts Center) held at Miami Northwestern Senior High School. During high school, Octavia won many talent shows and in her senior year won the Gold Medal in the NAACP Act-So Competition for Contemporary Solo Artist. At this point, a star was born.
Being a church kid, Octavia was raised on a great deal of gospel music including, but not limited to Dr. Mattie Moss Clark & The Clark Sisters, The Hawkins Family, and the late
Rev. James Cleveland. However, she knew she would sing R&B, as she had developed a love for ballads, spending a great deal of time in concert with her hairbrush as a
microphone singing the tunes of Whitney Houston, Luther Vandross and Nancy Wilson in her bedroom mirror.
Octavia began her professional career, in theatre, as she was given the part of "Sharon" in Michael Matthews Hit Gospel stage play Secret Lovers as well as understudy to Melba Moore. She went on to tour nationally with other plays such as GOD Don't Like Ugly and A Fool For Love, during which time she shared the stage with many mainstream artists including Ollie Ali Woodson of the legendary "Temptations", gospel singer Douglas Miller, Carl Payne
of the hit show "Martin", Johnny Gill, Dottie Peoples, Sean Levert, Dewayne Woods, Charlie Wilson of the "Gap Band", and Shemar Moore. Octavia has since worked with many artists, both live and in studio, Karen Clark Sheard, Daryl Coley, Jill Scott, Jamie Foxx, Ne-Yo, Kanye West, Common, Mos Def, Keyshia Cole, Bobby Brown, El Debarge, Anthony Hamilton, Al B Sure, Howard Hewitt, Monica, Melanie Fiona, Rahsaan Patterson, and the still unforgettable Natalie Cole, and others.
According to Octavia, "The road has been everything but easy, but with faith all things are possible." Through her music, Octavia's goal is to encourage people to love themselves, just the way they are, acknowledge the areas of their life that need improving, and work at them.
She wants her fans to "See every disappointment, every heartbreak, and every betrayal as
a lesson learned."
