The House of Yes
Absurd Reality Theatre is a company dedicated to producing theatrical endeavors that address issues that not only shape, but also transform who we are as individuals. To bring down the facades that hide what we really are and the powerful impact we can have as a society. For our opening season show, we have chosen The House of Yes by Wendy McLeod. The play presents a witty, darkly humorous, and fundamentally disturbing look at a dysfunctional family. Mirrored in our own search for identity, The House of Yes deals with the pursuit of finding ones own socially accepted self in an eschewed world that toes the line of surreal anarchy. A place where insanity is commonplace and reality is a loaded gun. The House of Yes is a fascinating blend of frivolous family politics and menacing political allegory. The Author, Wendy McLeod touches the nerve of our cozy, vicarious involvement with acts of public violence. Marty Pascal's homecoming to his family becomes something of a class struggle between the Pascals' poetic insanity and his fiance's plebian expectancy. Ultimately, this is a story of people who have never been said no to. In the Author's notes, Wendy McLeod said, "It's about an insularity I see in the upper classes, people who have cut themselves off from the rest of the world and are living by the rules they've invented." In addition, we constantly keep in mind that although they have been accustomed to money and power all of their lives, these characters are much deeper than they appear to be on the surface. We all have our secrets.
