Luca Parmitano is an Italian astronaut in the European Astronaut Corps for the European Space Agency (ESA). He was flight engineer for long-duration Expedition 36/37 to the International Space Station. Major Parmitano is also a pilot in the Italian Air Force with a Master's Degree in experimental flight test engineering. In 2007 he was awarded the Decoration for Aeronautical Valour in Silver by the President of the Italian Republic. He has been an astronaut since 2009 and has a family connection with New Mexico.
