Spring 1936, a working-class district in the north of Paris. In the center of town is the peeling faade of an old shuttered music hall, the Chansonia. Pigoil, a newly unemployed stage-hand, Milou, a hotheaded electrician and a skirt-chaser, and Jacky, former sandwich man, decide to take hold of their destiny by occupying the Chansonia and producing the hit musical that will allow them to buy the hall.
