Barrence Whitfield & the Savages, Four Piece Suit, Dwight & Nicole-Joe's Blues and Jazz Fest
Barrence Whitfield and the Savages, Four Piece Suit, Dwight and Nicole will appear at  the Center Arts at the Armory as part of Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone's First Annual Joe's Jazz and Blues Fest!  , 191, Highland Ave., 7:30pm; $12.50 in advance, $15 at the door; 18+, www.artsatthearmory.org

Singer of traditional R&B (i.e.,50s- and 60s-style), Barrence Whitfield is the owner of one incredible pair of lungs and limitless energy and enthusiasm for his music. A soul screamer in the spirit of Little Richard, Wilson Pickett, Solomon Burke, and early Don Covay,

Whitfield, backed by the blazing Savages, has delighted audiences the world over.  He has opened for and played with the likes of Bo Diddley, Tina Turner, George Thorogood and Robert Cray.

The second act of the evening is Four Piece Suit, a highball of sea-foam-soaked guitar and squalling tenor sax, shakennot stirredwith surf tangos, Battista-era mambos, beach blanket boppers, spy music, crime jazz, and movie themes.  Romance, humor, and sophistication with a big beat are the watchwords of this mainly instrumental band.  Truly beyond category, their eclectic instrumental, sometimes jazz, sometimes rock style, brings forth a unique blend of long forgotten musical influences and often suggests a certain film noir feeling.
The band features Milt Reder on Guitar, David Sholl on Sax, Dean Cassell on Bass and Andy Plaisted on drums.

Openers for the evening are the highly acclaimed underground soul/blues duo Dwight & Nicole (Dwight Ritcher and Nicole Nelson), who have been charming music fans and critics for years with their profound blend of American music. Equal parts 60s soul, Delta blues, and alternative rock, the duo is at the vanguard of New York Citys latest emergence of cool.  Theyre currently recording an album at Rear Window Studios to be released this fall.
