Forgotten Chicago Industrial Lincoln Park Walking Tour
Industrial? Lincoln Park? Believe it or not, the now-posh neighborhood of Lincoln Park has a rich industrial heritage.
Join us as we conduct an encore of our popular Industrial Lincoln Park tour for the first time since 2010. Still home to a surprising number of physical remnants, including the former meat distribution district of Lincoln, Lakewood and George, Lincoln Park was once home to companies manufacturing everything from the first portable 35mm movie projectors to "pre-smoked" pipes, jazz drums, and half of the blue print paper manufactured in the U.S.
While many industrial structures in Lincoln Park have been demolished, a surprising number of former factories remain, often converted into residences and other uses. Other oddities abound in the area as well, including the Lakeshore Centre, designed in the high tech style of architecture in 1979 and partially suspended over a former railroad right-of-way.
On this tour, we will also visit the historic Finkl Steel plant (first photo at top) along the Chicago River, which is in the process of being relocated to the South Side. We will discuss some of the historic structures of one of the last remnants of heavy industry along the North Branch.
Of course, we'll talk about many other remnants along the way, including derelict rail spurs that "spurred" industrial development, residential and commercial architecture, ethnic history, and other notable overlooked features of the area.
