Founded in 1992, Left Coast Chamber Ensemble communicates with audiences through inspiring performances of new and old chamber music. By embracing both musics, we enrich the audience's experience--we reawaken a feeling of immediacy in performances of familiar masterpieces and we reveal the powerful expressive intentions in the music of our time. The ensemble's twelve musicians, many of whom have played together since the 1980s, perform in different combinations, using strings, winds, guitar and piano to present a wide range of repertoire. The group has commissioned over 55 new works, sponsors an annual Composition Contest that draws over 150 applicants each year, and carries on a tradition of performing the very best that the composers of today (whether established or emerging) have to offer. From the East explores diverse works by 20th and 21st century composers who have roots in Asia and Eastern Europe but work within conventions of Western Classical music. The composers, hailing from Russia, Hungary, China, Serbia, India and Iran, reflect their musical heritage subtly or overtly:  sometimes folk melodies and rhythms, ancient cultivated musical traditions or popular dance music of their various homelands are readily apparent; at other times only the unique voice of the composer, born of his particular circumstances, is in evidence. In both cases, the cultural intersections have yielded music of enormous vitality.

FUGUE, FANTASY and NEW COMPANIONS

Beethoven's Grosse Fuge shocked audiences with its intense compact expression and many surprises when it was premiered in 1825 during the composer's last years.  Phantasy Quartet, composed by a 19-year-old Benjamin Britten in 1932, still holds a position as one of the most important pieces for oboe quartet. As companion pieces to these two influential masterpieces, Left Coast has commissioned new quartets from American composers Melinda Wagner, Kristin Kuster and Sam Nichols.

HARPSICHORD REDUX

A marvelous instrument, the harpsichord provided both structure and ornament to music in the Baroque era. It was supplanted almost entirely by the more powerful fortepiano for a time, but advocates like Wanda Landowska, a harpsichord virtuoso, helped establish the instrument's place in modern musical life. Left Coast showcases the harpsichord's many possibilities, beginning with Bach's G major Trio Sonata--a piece unsurpassed in beauty in the centuries since it was written--and Ligeti's brief solo works, which are maddening, hilarious and ecstatic all at once. We are excited to present works by two Bay Area composers: Tamper Resistant Dan Becker and a world premiere by Eric Zivian, as well as the harpsichord concerto written by Manuel de Falla for Landowska.  Eric Zivian and guest artist Katherine Heater are the featured harpsichordists.

AUDIBLE VISIONS

Musicians, focused on sound, are sometimes oblivious to the visual world, but there is the occasional composer who has sight nearly as acute as his or her hearing. Barbara Kolb's work for guitar and violin depicts an artist's palette, complete with cerulean blue; William Grant Still wrote a suite in which each movement was suggested by a different sculpture.  Gabriel Faure was one of the so-called "impressionist composers"  who preferred that a simplistic link not be made between his music and the art of his time; nonetheless, it is a real pleasure to hear his colorful piano quartet in the context of other works that were, in fact, literally motivated by color. The Finnish composer Saariaho creates sonic images of seven aspects of butterflies, while Matthew Barnson exploits an unusual sound palette in his abstract work for string quartet.  Left Coast celebrates the connection between eye and ear.

Left Coast Chamber Ensemble welcomes Rome Prize winner Kurt Rohde, our founding artistic director, back home to San Francisco after a year spent composing in Italy. Among the works he wrote while abroad is a concertino dedicated to violinist Axel Strauss. We are fortunate to present Strauss and the dynamic percussionist Chris Froh in this new piece. The other works on the program, alternately brilliant and warm, include music showcasing Stacey Pelinka's flute playing as well as star turns for clarinetist Jerry Simas.  And we can promise that Bresnick's meltingly beautiful *** will sweep you off your feet.
