35 Years Taller - Pinna & Santillan (A 5 de Mayo Celebration)
El Taller Latino Americano is proud to present Julio Santillan and Franco Pinna, as part of our 35th Anniversary celebration - 35 Years Taller. The musicians come to El Taller where both started performing in NYC, as well as continue in their musical experiments and collaborations.

About the duo:

Julio Santillán is a Barcelona-based composer and guitarist originally from Tucumán, Argentina. His compositions combine elements from his home land folk music, jazz improvisation and classical music. He has studied classical guitar at Instituto Superior de Música (Argentina) under the direction of maestro Pablo González Jasey. He graduated summa cum laude with a dual major in Classical Composition and Contemporary Writing and Production from Berklee College of Music (Boston, USA). He also studied jazz improvisation with Mick Goodrick. As a composer/arranger he has produced music for documentary films, theater, recordings and live performances for artists around the world. Recently, Argentinian virtuoso guitarist Victor Villadangos, has included guitar studies from Julio's Book Cinco Estudios Criollos in his latest CD Guitar Music from Argentina vol. II (Naxos). Julio also produced Colombian singer Marta Gomez's "Cantos de Agua Dulce", "Entre Cada Palabra" (Chesky Records) and "La Ronda"- Women of Latin America, "Paula Ausente" - Women of the World (Putumayo Records). He has recorded and performed with many musicians from Argentina, Boston and New York including Oscar Stagnaro (Paquito D'Rivera), Livingston Taylor, Raúl Carnota, Quique Sinesi, Juan Falú and Sandra Mihanovich. Mr. Santillán has shared the stage with important artists such as Mercedes Sosa, John Mayer, Pablo Ziegler (Astor Piazzolla), Paquito D'Rivera, Bonnie Raitt, Tania Libertad, Diana Krall and Leon Gieco. He and his groups have been featured in some of the most prestigious venues in the U.S. such as Blue Note (New York) and Regattabar (Boston). He has released four cds with his compositions: Desde el Norte, Anit Negra, Nann and El Bosque de la Memoria (BigSur Records).

Franco Pinna started his musical career in 1988 in Tucuman, Argentina where he performed and recorded with some of the most distinguished musicians of the country.
In January of 1998 Franco moved to Boston to enter the Berklee College of Music where he obtained the "Outstanding Musicianship" scholarship and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2000 under the Professional Music Diploma program.

The drummer has dedicated a big part of his career to study the vast variety of rhythms that exist in South American folklore, creating a unique way of interpret them incorporating some traditional percussion instruments in to the drum set and developing his own style based on the folkloric percussion techniques.

Franco has performed and recorded a wide variety of rhythms with many artists around the globe such as :
Fernando Huergo, Marta Gomez, Pablo Ziegler, Lucia Pulido, Quique Sinesi, Yulia Musayelyan, Raul Carnota, Claudio Ragazzi, Lucho Hoyos, Sofia Rei, Rafi Malkiel, Javier Ruibal, Claudia Acuña,Sofia Tosello, Diego Obregon, Hiroya Tsukamoto,Juancho Herrera, Raul Midon, Idan Raichel,Pablo Mayor, Pedro Giraudo,Mika Pohjola, Gustavo Casenave, Manuel Santos, Julio Santillan, Katie Viqueira, Pablo Ablanedo, Matthias Bublath, Oscar Stagnaro,Andrew Kim, Emilio Teubal, Haeng Soul,Oscar Penas, Lara Bello, Marta Topferova,Carlos Michelini, Alejandro Florez, Florencia Gonzalez, Julio Botti, Gustavo Moretto ,
among others.

As a sideman, Franco has recorded more than 70 CDs, some of them released by prestigious labels such as "Fresh Sound" ,"Chesky Records","Putumayo World Music", "Sony",etc.
